How to disable hardcore in Minecraft?

My girlfriend accidentally enabled hardcore mode in Minecraft, dooming herself to experience the ultimate frustration sooner or later on her first playthrough. Is there any (presumably non-legitimate) way to disable it?

Here’s a quick how-to:

  1. Download NBTExplorer (if unsure, get the ZIP file).
  2. Unzip/install, and then run (make sure Minecraft is closed).
  3. Click Open NBT Data Source and select %APPDATA%\.minecraft\saves\%WORLDNAME%\level.dat (you can copy-paste the %APPDATA%\.minecraft\saves part into the address bar).
  4. Expand Data, double-click hardcore, enter 0, click OK.
  5. Click Save All Modified Tags.
  6. Voila!

This also works for Macs now.
